It’s the end of search as we know it—and marketers are trying to figure out what comes next.
For over two decades, SEO was the default playbook for online visibility. It spawned an entire industry of keyword stuffers, backlink brokers, auditing tools and analytics dashboards. But in 2025, the rules of search are being rewritten. With AI-generated answers now taking up prime real estate at the top of Google results—and AI-native platforms like Perplexity and Claude built directly into Apple’s Safari browser—we’re entering a new phase: Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO).
And for marketers, that means a seismic shift.
From Page Ranks to Prompts
In the SEO era, visibility meant ranking high on a list of blue links. Today, visibility means being cited as a source by a language model. If Google’s AI Overview answers a question without the user ever clicking, where does that leave your traditional SEO strategy?
Here’s how the game has changed:
- Traditional SEO rewards repetition and precision.
- GEO rewards clarity, context and density of meaning.
The formats are shifting too. Bullet points, “in summary” statements, and clearly segmented content are far more likely to be extracted and referenced by models like GPT-4o, Gemini or Claude. It’s not just about writing for humans anymore—it’s about writing for machines that simulate how humans think.
And this isn’t just a Google story. AI-native search is becoming fragmented across platforms like ChatGPT, Siri, Instagram, and even Amazon—each powered by different models with different intents. The average query length is now 23 words. Sessions last longer. Answers vary by platform. Welcome to Act II of search.
From Click-Throughs to Model Memory
The new metric isn’t just ranking. It’s reference.
GEO is about ensuring your brand or content is part of the model’s memory—cited in AI answers, included in summaries, or even spontaneously surfaced in response to natural language prompts. It’s less “can people find you?” and more “will the model remember you?”
Emerging tools like Profound, Daydream, and Goodie are helping brands track their AI footprint. These platforms show how often you’re mentioned by name, the context you appear in, and how your brand compares to competitors in model-generated outputs. Some even fine-tune synthetic prompts at scale, so you can monitor and shape how your brand is perceived by the AI layer.
Ahrefs, Semrush, and Similarweb are racing to build GEO dashboards. And it’s only the beginning.
What About Clicks?
Good question. Referral traffic from ChatGPT is already real—and growing. AI doesn’t kill organic traffic, but it changes how it flows. Being a cited source (and optimising for citation formatting) now matters as much as hitting Page 1.
Why GEO is a Platform Opportunity
If SEO was decentralised and messy, GEO might be the opposite. The big players will own the stack—insight, creative generation, training prompts, and feedback loops—all while layering in clickstream data, brand-safe content, and first-party behavioural signals.
This won’t just be a new tactic. GEO will become a channel. Brands that learn how to inject themselves into model outputs will outperform the ones still optimising for SERPs.
And yes, it’s still early. Models evolve. Algorithms change. But just like SEO in 2005, the brands who start learning now will be the ones shaping the next generation of digital marketing.
So… What Should You Be Doing?
At Bubbly, we’re already adjusting how we build content for our clients:
- We’re optimising content for AI readability—segmenting, summarising, and structuring our content so it’s reference-ready.
- We’re testing AI citation rates—analysing how different content formats, tones, and structures show up in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Claude.
- We’re advising clients on a GEO-informed brand strategy—one that includes monitoring their brand footprint across AI-generated content, not just traditional search.
And we’re maintaining our traditional SEO strategies that include technical and on-page optimisation, because this isn’t the death of SEO. But it’s definitely its evolution.
Want help getting your brand GEO-ready? We’re building strategies now to make sure our clients don’t get left behind.
